All Legal Services are Not the Same

There are different levels of legal services offered in the United States. There are simple legal advisors who may have qualifications as a paralegal who give advice and guidance. These services are valuable for simple cases or low-risk lawsuits. Pricing is usually very fair and basically you get what you pay for.

The next level up is an actual licensed attorney. They have many years of college education and training. They represent you in court and handle the financials. The only drawback is that pricing can get pretty steep.

It’s important to understand a specialist versus a general practitioner of law. A general practitioner handles many different cases in all categories of law. They typically don’t specialize in any one field. You see more attorneys of this kind in small towns. A specialist will usually have only one or two kinds of law they practice. They stay focused on that area and become super good at practicing it.

Lawyers’ fees range based on expertise, experience, track record and area of operation. If you are hiring an auto accident attorney in Melbourne, FL, for example, you will pay more for an attorney with 20 years on the job than you will for an attorney who graduated law school 2 years ago.

The field of law with the most variance in fee structure is criminal law. A criminal defense attorney with a storied history of getting their clients’ cases dropped can sometimes bill in the 6-figure range. Whereas a public defender isn’t getting paid by the client at all and gets a menial salary from the city. Most attorneys in the marketplace fall somewhere between those two examples I just gave.

It is worth your time and effort to spend 10 or 15 minutes Googling an attorney before you hire them. This way you get a better idea of what they are capable of. They will usually have a well-documented history, and you can check out reviews publicly available on Google and review websites. Do you want an attorney with 3.6 stars or one that has 4.8 stars? It’s your case and you should hire whomever you think gives you the best chance at success.

There are a couple dozen areas of law in the USA. That’s why there are quite literally a million attorneys in the nation. You wouldn’t want to hire an attorney who just finished a divorce case to handle your criminal case would you? No, you want to hire an attorney who practices criminal law exclusively. They know the ins and outs of the law and courtroom. Chances are they know the judge and prosecutor as well. Every little bit helps.

Some legal fields lend themselves to another. If you have an attorney that specializes in Estate law and also specializes in finance this can be very helpful. These two categories overlap and you won’t be forced to hire two attorneys for the same issue.

The bottom line is this: shop around. Hire an attorney who specializes in your kind of case. Check their background and success record. You will be glad you did.
